It’s a Lifestyle: Scandinavian Minimalism

This summer, I took a trip with my mom to my favorite country, Denmark. I think anyone who has visited may be able to attest to this when I say that the country feels a bit like Disney World for design enthusiasts.

Every corner has something unique behind it and even the sidewalks are beautiful with their sewage drains in the shape of butterflies. The bikes leaned peacefully against organic wooden facades alongside cobblestone paths in the center of town is enough to make anyone go “I could live here.” How can a place be so economically successful, happy, and functioning while still quiet and organized? Coming from NYC and being used to the chaos that has always symbolized a bustling city to me makes it hard to wrap my head around Copenhagen.

One of the main reasons why I continue to return to Copenhagen is because of the way I feel in most spaces there. The simplicity of the design makes it easier for me to breathe and think clearly (not to mention, breathing the clean air itself is like taking sips of oxygen with every breath, not to be dramatic or anything..). The interiors of every restaurant, bakery, shop, and even the metro, feel easy to digest. The Danes do an excellent job of creating beautiful, functional spaces that serve purpose while still adhering to the basic principles of design.

When you look up, beyond the beautiful architecture and interiors, you notice the people. Besides the fact that they are almost alarmingly kind, they have a unique sense of fashion that is effortlessly “cool.” Cream-colored cargo pants paired with chunky Ganni cardigans layered with a pastel-colored scarf and a tousled braid. Layers are key here in Denmark, especially during the summer months as it may be cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon, and then back to cold around 4:00.

Scandinavian fashion in general is known for being more sustainable, less form-fitting, and overall functional. Copenhagen Fashion Week has harnessed a lot more attention in recent years and I am always excited to scan Vogue Scandinavia for the coolest streetwear looks seen cycling through Nyhavn at this popular time.
